Keeping Warm

Heat pumps are a popular way to heat homes in southern climates like ours—and that’s why there are a number of misconceptions about how they work—and how well—on the coldest days of the year. This is even more concerning as it seems like the jet stream keeps dipping lower every year, bringing “northern” weather to North Florida! So let’s learn a bit more about these great appliances and how installing a new one can keep you comfortable year round.

One unit for heating and cooling

Despite the name, a heat pump is a multipurpose system that can be used to both heat and cool your home. Running a second system for AC is unnecessary. Heat pumps use refrigerant to transfer heat between the indoor and outdoor air, moving heat inside in colder weather and outside when the mercury rises.

Energy efficient and wallet-friendly

Rather than burning fuel (like natural gas or oil) to generate heat, heat pumps use electric to transfer heat between air flows of differing temperatures. This is much more efficient and can lead to a savings of up to 30% on your electricity bill. Heat pumps also move heat nearly constantly to always keep your home comfortable. If the “source” air gets too cold, heat pumps have a second stage that will engage to deliver even warmer air.

Able to beat the heat and the cold

Since heat pumps are mostly used in more moderate climates, it’s thought that they aren’t able to deal with colder temperatures the way that furnaces can. But improved efficiency over the years mean that there are heat pump models that can effectively heat a home at temperatures as low as 0° Fahrenheit! Hopefully we won’t be seeing temperatures like that here, or dealing much with snowfall or wind chills, but it’s reassuring to know that heat pumps are a great option even if Florida freezes over.

Long-lasting

Using one HVAC unit year round might make you concerned about its longevity, but there’s no need to be concerned. Running any AC or heating unit—even seasonally—still requires proper maintenance and care. With appropriate regular maintenance, a good quality heat pump can serve your home for 15-20 years.
